"Streaming Reaches Historic Milestone," and Why You Need to Take Advantage... plus HOW!
Nielsen's "The Guage," Reports "Streaming Usage Up 71% Since 2021, with YouTube, Netflix and Other Platforms Showing Dramatic Growth Over Four Years."
When I saw this in the Reliable Sources newsletter, lead by
, I had to bring it to your attention. Nielsen’s monthly report of The Gauge is out with evidence supporting what I have been seeing and sharing here! The Gauge states that YouTube saw “significant growth and is up over 120% since 2021.” 120% — Guys if this doesn’t make you want to create content for YouTube, I don’t know what will.
This tidbit is also worth highlighting, “YouTube represented 12.5% of all television viewing in May, its fourth consecutive monthly share increase and the highest share of TV for any streamer to date.”
For the record I began a YouTube show but I stopped down to plan it out. Creating long-form content on YouTube is time consuming. Even as a producer I found it hard to commit to a production schedule. Why? Because I wasn’t being paid. Not being paid to create content pushed other paid opportunities up on the priority list. Now that I am committed to not making money, just kidding, I am going to make time to create content on YouTube and you should too! What I’ve realized is that you can grow even while keeping it simple. Check out
His show does not require a huge production lift. What Do I Talk About?
YouTube experts say focus on long-lasting content but I have been seeing a surge in NEWS, especially breaking news. I believe if you are a journalist you should lean into both new and evergreen content on YouTube.

If YouTube is seeing growth and becoming a place where viewers find trusted sources you could become one of those reliable sources if you focus on your strengths.
Make yourself relevant by weighing in or explaining newsy topics.
News doesn’t have to be breaking news or hard news it can be industry news, trends and topics related to your industry that are FRESH. Research what is being discussed and talk about what isn’t being talked about.
Showcase your expertise by kicking off a topic based on a new report, headline or trend in your niche.
Start slow. Skip the long-form content that is highly produced and create SHORTS!
Jill Comes Clean launched YouTube after building a massive following on Instagram. She started growing on YouTube using: SHORTS! For months she posted shorts…only! When the channel had thousands of subscribers she began dropping long-form content.
Think Like a Producer
Traditional news will always have a place. However more often I find people consuming the news don’t remember where they got their news. On social media or YouTube sources are rarely discussed by experts. I highly recommend thinking like a producer and use visuals and language that help you legitimize yourself. Use headlines, sources, and mention where you got the news before weighing in on it. This will, in my opinion, help you rise as an authority online and build trust with your audience.

Don’t Let Views Stop You
If you give this a go and don’t go viral don’t worry. Instead of worrying about the numbers be consistent. Create a routine. Post Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday or Tuesday and Thursday or maybe only on Wednesday or Sunday nights. Come up with a flow and show-up.
Remember views are, most likely, real people. If the numbers are low at first look into your SEO, Description and Thumbnail or Shorts Cover that you used. Can you improve there?
Also to help you visualize this is what “low views” LOOK LIKE:
1000 Views

P.S. If you made it this far realize I leaned into the news to bring you my thoughts on the topic. It can be as simple as finding articles and reports that help tee-up your opinions.
